Known / Recently Reported Issues

Last Updated: 05/06/2010

Below is a list of known issues and feature requests for gSyncit that may be addressed/added in a future release. These items are current as of the latest release of gSyncit.

With each planned update this list is reviewed to determine what is feasible within the timeframe for the release.

  • Known Issue: When switching an Outlook recurring event to a non-recurring event the Google event does not reflect this change. This is a Google calendar defect.

  • Known Issue: gSyncit does not handle syncing events in the Google calendar that occur in time zones outside the Google calendar default time zone. This is mainly related to a Google calendar limitation that does not allow for events in different time zones.

  • Known Issue: gSyncit does not sync Outlook event attendees contained within a distribution list. Outlook distribution lists should automatically be synced with a matching Gmail group. Gmail groups should also be allowed to sync as a distribution list in Outlook.

  • Known Issue: When changing an email address for an Outlook contact that has been synced with Gmail then both the old and the new email address will appear in the Gmail contact. Deleting the email associated with the Outlook contact is also not properly reflected in the Gmail contact and the old email will remain in the Gmail contact. This issue is complicated by the fact that Outlook supports three addresses and Gmail supports more than three.

  • Known Issue: gSyncit tray app keeps the Outlook process running when Outlook is closed. The gSyncit tray app should only open Outlook when performing an automatic or manual sync then close Outlook.

  • Known Issue: Event collision detection does not work on recurring event exceptions.

  • Known Issue: When the windows time zone is changed without also changing the Google calendar time zone and updating the gSyncit calendar sync mapping then duplicate events with incorrect times can appear in the Outlook and Google calendars.

  • Known Issue: Users have expressed issues with the speed of the contact sync process.

  • Known Issue: Users has reported that closing Outlook in the middle of a sync will causing Outlook to crash. (unconfirmed issue).

  • Known Issue: gSyncit does not properly sync the correct organizer of the event when creating a new Google recurring event with participants. This is because Google calendar does not allow for the creating of recurring events where the "owner" or "organizer" is someone besides the creator of the actual event.

  • Known Issue: When syncing participants to Outlook from a secondary Google calendar the even owner appears as (random characters)@groups.google.com rather than the email address of the organizer of the event.

  • Feature Request: Users have requested the ability to not sync and/or remove completed tasks.

  • Feature Request: Users have requested the ability to extend the contact matching of contacts between Gmail and outlook to include the phone number. This allows for matching contacts with the same name, no email, and different phone numbers.

  • Feature Request:  User has requested the ability to sync Outlook tasks with Google calendar where the Google event automatically is moved to the current date each day to reflect the "no due date" state of the Outlook task.

  • Feature Request: Users have requested the ability to perform a global username/password change for Google account information to avoid having to open each gSyncit mapping to change this information.

  • Feature Request: The ability to sync multiple Google accounts without requiring Outlook to be loaded. This overlaps with a sever version of gSyncit that connects with Exchange Server.

  • Feature Request: Users have requested that gSyncit appear on the Outlook 2010 Ribbon as a new tab vs. under the add-ins tab so that it can be added to the quick access bar.

  • Feature Request: Users have requested the ability to sync Outlook notes with the Gmail notes group so that notes will appear on the iPhone which syncs notes to this group vs. Google documents.

  • Feature Request: User has requested the ability to show the event organizer in the description of the event when creating recurring events in the Google calendar that are originally organized by another user and the event was created outside of Google calendar.

  • Feature Request: User has requested the ability to sync task priority as part of the Google event subject and/or location to make it easier to sort/list/search tasks based on priority.

  • Feature Request: User has requested the ability to set a threshold to determine when the delete confirmation dialog should appear. If the threshold is 5 then the delete confirmation dialog would only appear when 5 or mote items are being deleted.

  • Feature Request: User has requested the ability to automatically delete Google tasks (calendar events) that are marked as complete such that Google maintains a list of active/open tasks only.

  • Feature Request: User has requested the ability to set a default reminder time for calendar events using gSyncit 'default' options rather than the native Google/Outlook options.

  • Feature Request: Show a sync summary at the end of the sync process showing all items updated/deleted/inserted for each sync operation.

  • Feature Request: Ability to sync Outlook items that contain ALL specified categories rather than one or more specified categories. In more technical terms make the category matching based on a configurable "OR" or "AND" operation.

  • Feature Request: Users have suggested enabling gSyncit to sync _individual_ items immediately after they are changed in Outlook rather than having to sync all items.

  • Feature Request: Users have suggested providing a wizard like interface for initially configuring gSyncit.

  • Feature Request: Users have requests the ability to use the working hours on an Outlook task to determine the duration of task in the Google calendar. Users would like to define a work day/week with a set of working hours per day. This information would be used to determine Google event/task durations.

  • Feature Request: User has requested the ability sync individual mappings and/or groups of mappings vs. all mappings. For example, users would like to be able to auto-sync calendars but occasionally sync a _specific_ contact list and not have to sync all mappings.

  • Feature Request: User has requested that the sync process clearly indicate that is deleting a duplicate event vs. a non-duplicated event.

  • Feature Request: User has requested the ability to configure proxy settings based on the active network. This allows for proxy settings to easily be adjusted when switching between a network with and without a proxy server.

  • Feature Request: The ability to select which days to perform automatic syncing.

  • Feature Request: The ability to switch the windows time zone and have Outlook recurring events sync to Google calendar with the proper times.

  • Feature Request: The ability to only assign categories to items imported from the Google calendar rather than using categories as a filtering mechanism. This allows for imported items to be assigned to category while being able to push all items to the Google calendar without any category restrictions.

  • Feature Request: The ability to filter out calendar events from the calendar sync that are birthdays for Outlook contacts.

  • Feature Request: The ability to automatically detect when an Outlook item is changed and sync a single item rather than have to sync all items.

  • Feature Request: Have gSyncit automatically download the latest version of gSyncit and then prompt the user to install the update. Additionally, users would also like gSyncit to silently install the latest version if possible.

  • Feature Request: Ability to sync Google task lists with Outlook tasks. Currently, gSyncit will sync Outlook tasks tasks with Google calendars. Syncing Outlook tasks with Google task lists is pending Google exposing an interface for third party developers to access this information. Once available this functionality will be added. Google is aware of the need for this interface.

  • Feature Request: The ability to set separate sync intervals for calendar and contact sync.

  • Feature Request: Option to sync only tentative events and/or show tentative events in the Google calendar as "{subject} - Tentative" since Google calendar does not support the concept of tentative.

  • Feature Request: Ability to show "Busy" or "Free" in the subject when syncing free/busy information.

  • Feature Request: Users have requested that the gSyncit tray icon indicate that the sync process is running.

  • Feature Request: Users have requested a way to sync between two Google contact accounts without having to use Outlook.

  • Feature Request: command-line options to gSyncit to invoke the sync process from the command-line.

  • Feature Request: Enable the auto sync process to suppress any gSyncit error dialogs during the sync. If there is a connection issues then there are cases where a dialog is displayed when the option to continue on error is set to enabled.

  • Feature Request: Ability to sync a contact folder and subfolders in Outlook with Gmail contacts.

  • Feature Request: Ability to run gSyncit from a USB memory stick to get around corporate security policies that do not allow installing software.

  • Feature Request: Ability to sync Outlook distribution lists with Gmail groups.

  • Feature Request: Show a percent completed during the sync process.
